Did you know that 780 kids in St Johns County school are homeless?
Of those, 200 are unaccompanied homeless youth – without a designated parent or guardian.
A program of St Francis Housing Crisis Center, Port in the Storm aims to help homeless youth before they spiral down into the pit of chronic homelessness, mental illness or suicide, by offering them a safe place off the streets, life skills, basic needs, job skills, housing assistance and more. Caring adults provide stability, hope and a path to successful future through Positive Youth Development programming.
Facing A New Challenge
The week before Christmas last year, a sewage backflow flooded Port in the Storm and their main office, forcing the youth and staff to evacuate. Extensive repairs are needed, which are not covered by insurance, and the estimated need to get the youth back in their space is $241,000.
Hope In Sight
An anonymous gift of $50,000 from a Christ Church Among the Oaks parishioner has prompted us to create a challenge for the rest of us, to step in and change the trajectory of the lives of our homeless youth. Your gift of any amount counts toward this challenge. Let’s help Port in the Storm get the money they need to repair and return to their space, and get back to the business of helping homeless youth in St Johns County.
