in-person participation in worship services is cancelled for this Sunday. We invite you to attend the services via livestream on our YouTube channel.
As you know, our regathering for in-person Sunday worship started on Pentecost, May 31st, with “Walk in Love: A Movable Feast.” We worshiped in that way (outside, touchless) for two weeks. We moved inside on June 14, under strict social distancing protocols, and it was a glorious homecoming! All of that joyous worship was made possible by assiduous attention to the metrics established by the State of Florida, the CDC, and the Diocese of Florida.
Sadly, because we have seen a dramatic surge of new cases of Covid-19 in our area, it is again apparent that the most loving course of action is the temporary suspension of indoor, in-person worship gatherings.
The parameters we established at the outset of our phased regathering plan included suspending in-person worship should the number of new infections rise considerably, and that is what drives our decision-making now. As of Wednesday night, the infection rate for Covid-19 in St. Johns County was 1.3, and trending upwards. That means, on average, each infected person is giving the virus to 1.3 other people. At this rate Covid-19 cases could quadruple in our community within a month. As is the case for many places around the country, we must take steps to control infection in our community.
We will continue to monitor the metrics, looking for a consistently lower rate of transmission. We hope that will be soon. Please stay home, stay safe, and if you do venture out, wear a mask and observe social distancing.
While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to gather this Sunday in-person, we do believe that this is the most loving thing to do right now.
