Helping Local Kids Experiencing Hunger at Home
Due to a significant rise in unemployment in 2020, and a corresponding increase in child poverty, it’s projected that 18 million children (1 in 4) may be struggling with food insecurity at home. Children in need are fed during the school week by federal government programs, and a national non-profit organization called Blessings in a Backpack wants to make sure they’re getting nutritional food on the weekend, too. It may surprise you to know that over 50 children in Palm Valley Schools receive food assistance each week through Blessings in a Backpack, thanks to the efforts of a small ministry group led by Christ Church parishioners Sharon and Ken Kehoe.
Volunteers are invited to join the packing team in the Westbury Hall dining room at 8:30 a.m. any Thursday during the school year. Packing is light work and takes less than one hour.
Food donations are gladly accepted! Donations of individually wrapped non-perishable food items supplement those provided by Blessings in a Backpack. Suggested items include:
- Granola bars
- Peanut Butter or Cheese Crackers
- Fruit Cups/Pouches
- Snack Puddings
- Instant Oatmeal Packets
- Fruit Juice Boxes
Other Ways to Support the Program
Donate your clean, dry plastic grocery bags. Food is packed in plastic bags so it can be discreetly placed in students backpacks. Bring in your donations any time during the week and drop them off in the parish hall dining room with a note specifying they are for Blessings in a Backpack.
Make encouraging note cards to be included in the food packages. See Deacon Leila for more information.
Pray for the children receiving the food packages.
